I present here a completely unique example of schema markup, \u201cOut of My Head\u201d. There will be no talk of avatars or tigers here, nor football teams and movie directors. You own a small business in a town where there is competition and you provide a service in that town and you want Google to understand who you are, what you do, where you are, and why you are better than the other guys!<\/p>\n
Schema is code, added to your website\u2019s html, that allows search engines to better understand what information is contained on the web page.<\/p>\n
https:\/\/schema.org\/docs\/gs.html<\/a>\u00a0is a good place to get started with schema, it outlines the different structures and syntaxes for schema markup. The properties are clickable links that will open to a new page showing further properties, if applicable, and expected values for the property. Careful, you can quickly end up way down the rabbit hole, with 20 open windows, and a red queen looking for your head!<\/p>\n https:\/\/search.google.com\/structured-data\/testing-tool<\/a>\u00a0is where you can test your schema, either by uploading your code snippets or by fetching a url. The result will show you the schema from the top level down, with expanding sub-sections, delineating errors and warnings. The warnings are often expected values that Google would like to see included with your markup. So if Google would like to see them, I recommend you put them in.<\/p>\n First and foremost, the advantage of using schema is to minimize ambiguity about:<\/p>\n One theory is, if the search engine understands your website better, then you will rank higher in SERPs. Another theory is, if you get rich snippets in SERPs, you have more real estate on the page, and more information than the others on the page, thus, you are more likely to get a click.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”1″ _address=”1.0.0.1″]<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”2″ _address=”1.0.0.2″]<\/p>\n So now that you have all that digested let\u2019s get to marking up the code using schema.<\/p>\n we will see this idea in action when we add schema to the html above.<\/p>\n 2. Try to wrap everything in 1 <itemscope><\/p>\n The first thing we are going to add is an <itemscope> of WebPage to define that the web page is, in fact, a web page. Strictly speaking this is not necessary, search engines understand they are looking at web pages\u2026for the most part. I have chosen to add this to the <html> tag because it defines the page. So it looks like this:<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”3″ _address=”1.0.0.3″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”4″ _address=”1.0.0.4″]<\/p>\n So the <itemscope> ends with the <\/html> tag, so everything in-between is part of the itemtype WebPage. So the properties, <itemprop>\u2019s, you can define are found at\u00a0<\/span>https:\/\/schema.org\/WebPage<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and you can see these for yourself at the link. A couple of the more interesting ones, IMO, are:\u00a0<\/span>mainContentOfPage<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>specialty<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>which gives us a places to define what we do and how it is better than the other guy\u2019s.<\/p>\n It should also be noted that\u00a0<\/span>Webpage<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>is a sub-category of\u00a0<\/span>CreativeWork<\/em>, so all the itemprop\u2019s of\u00a0<\/span>CreativeWork<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>is also available to us to use in the\u00a0<\/span>WebPage\u00a0<\/span><\/em>itemtype.<\/p>\n Since this is a Service page, I defined an <itemscope> using the <div id=\u201dwrapper\u201d> so everything, including the footer is part of the \u201cService\u201d <itemscope>.<\/p>\n We can further define the \u201cserviceType\u201d, description in subsequent elements and the \u201careaServed\u201d in a <meta itemprop> tag as seen below in the code block. So here is what it looks like:<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”5″ _address=”1.0.0.5″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”6″ _address=”1.0.0.6″]<\/p>\n I added in the <itemprop> of \u201cserviceType\u201d as a property of \u201cService\u201d and used the <h1> as the value for that. Then description is another <itemprop> of \u201cService\u201d and I wrapped that around the intro paragraph for the page. I did not wrap the <itemprop> of \u201cprovider\u201d around the logo and business name, preferring to do that in the footer where all the information is together.<\/p>\n It should be noted that there are a growing number of specific \u201cserviceTypes\u201d that are predefined with their own specialized set of schema available like\u00a0<\/span>FoodService<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>Taxi Service.<\/em><\/p>\n This can be particularly important to service providers with mobile services, like furnace repair, driveway paving, etc. and service areas can be small or large, but it is a good idea to define them. For this, looking at the code block above, we used a <meta itemprop> tag. The logic goes like this.<\/p>\n There are many ways to define areaServed, this was just one of them.<\/p>\n So we want to show off our great work, for web-products we look to link to things directly but for physical products we can only put images of our work on the web page. We do this by using the <itemprop> \u201cserviceOutput\u201d which is a property of \u201cService\u201d. Before we mark up this section it looks like this:<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”7″ _address=”1.0.0.7″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”8″ _address=”1.0.0.8″]<\/p>\n This section shows 2 examples of our service, each with a photo and a description.<\/p>\n The first example is marked up as a tangible product, so in the context of \u201cService\u201d it would be finished product as a result of the Service, like a furnace would be the result of a furnace installation service.<\/p>\n The second example is more of an intangible service like refinishing of an existing hardwood floor. I have included 2 images, before and after, for this service. The \u201cserviceOutput\u201d in this case is an \u201cAction\u201d. I have included and \u201cobject\u201d of \u201cold hardwood floor\u201d that the \u201cAction\u201d in performed upon. Marking these up will allow them to show in your Google My Business knowledge card. They will be marked as \u201cReviews from the web\u201d or at least that is what they call them today.<\/p>\n There are 2 reviews below, I will mark up both and add and aggregate rating. The aggregate rating can show up in SERPs as starts alongside your listing.<\/p>\n Here is the html before we mark it up<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”11″ _address=”1.0.0.11″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”12″ _address=”1.0.0.12″]<\/p>\n The code below shows the schema markup added to the reviews. This can be a little daunting so I will go through it piece by piece.<\/p>\n The 2 reviews are basically the same. We start with a <itemprop=\u201dreview\u201d> which is a property of \u201cService\u201d, which we wrapped around everything using the <div id=\u201dwrapper\u201d>. So we set the <itemscope> to wrap around a single review and defined the <itemtype> as Review. We defined the properties of Review using: \u201cname\u201d, \u201cdatePublished\u201d, \u201cauthor\u201d, \u201creviewRating\u201d and \u201creviewBody\u201d. We wrapped these around the appropriate data.<\/p>\n We further defined the <itemtype> of author as \u201cPerson\u201d and defined the property \u201cname\u201d of Person. We could define many more properties of Person here if we wanted, like: address, birthDate, email, awards, siblings, spouse, etc but this seems pointless as an author of a review unless they are a celebrity of some sort.<\/p>\n We also defined the \u201creviewRating\u201d as <itemtype> \u201cRating\u201d which has the properties of \u201cworstRating\u201d, which we added in using a meta tag, and represents the beginning of the rating scale. Similarly \u201cbestRating\u201d defines the best possible rating on the scale and finally \u201cratingValue\u201d which is the rating the author gave.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”13″ _address=”1.0.0.13″]<\/p>\n <\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”14″ _address=”1.0.0.14″]<\/p>\n I placed the aggregate rating before the actual reviews, it could be placed at the bottom of the reviews, or anywhere on the page. It basically shows an average value of the ratings \u2014 4.5\/5 on 2 reviews. As stated before this can show up in SERPs included in your listing.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”15″ _address=”1.0.0.15″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”16″ _address=”1.0.0.16″]<\/p>\n The whole point of this exercise is to show that your company offers this great service, can show some super results from the output of the service and has some very happy clients who have used the service\u2026but now\u2026we need to define who you are!<\/p>\n The footer of your webpage is a good place to add the schema markup because all the information is together. The concept here is to wrap the whole footer using the <itemprop> \u201cprovider\u201d of the \u201cService\u201d, then define it as an \u201cOrganization\u201d and a \u201cLocalBusiness\u201d .<\/p>\n Below is the code for the footer before we mark it up with schema. It consists of 3 columns. Column1 includes the business name, logo, address and other contact information. Column2 is basically just a map. Column3 includes social media links.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”17″ _address=”1.0.0.17″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”18″ _address=”1.0.0.18″]<\/p>\n To start with we used \u201cprovider\u201d an <itemprop> of \u201cService\u201d to wrap around the whole footer assigning an <itemscope> to the expected value of \u201cLocalBusiness\u201d as the <itemtype>. Said another way, the whole footer represents the provider of the service, which is a local business\u2026and here is their information.<\/p>\n In Column1 we defined the <itemprop>\u2019s \u201cname\u201d, \u201caddress\u201d, \u201ctelephone\u201d, \u201clogo\u201d and \u201cemail\u201d. For LocalBusiness Google expects \u201cpriceRange\u201d and \u201cimage\u201d (additional image, not just a logo). If you do not define these Google will throw an error or warning when you pass it through the structured data tester. I added these in using <meta itemprop=\u201d\u201d\u2026>. I also added in the domain using <meta itemprop=\u201durl\u201d \u2026> to define the homepage in any data aggregater that picks this up as a data set.<\/p>\n To define the address better we used:<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ text_font=”Times New Roman||||||||” text_text_color=”#cccccc” background_color=”#000000″ custom_padding=”|||11px|false|false” _i=”19″ _address=”1.0.0.19″]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.29.3″ _i=”20″ _address=”1.0.0.20″]<\/p>\n The <itemtype> PostalAddress has further <itemprop>\u2019 s of: \u201cstreetAddress\u201d, \u201caddressLocality\u201d, \u201caddressRegion\u201d, \u201cpostalCode\u201d and \u201caddressCountry\u201d.
