{"id":313,"date":"2013-07-31T17:23:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-31T21:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harrisweb.ca\/blog\/?p=313"},"modified":"2015-04-10T10:19:39","modified_gmt":"2015-04-10T14:19:39","slug":"social-media-for-small-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.harrisweb.ca\/blog\/social-media-for-small-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Media for Small Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tednguyenusa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/small_business_2.0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 15px; color: #000000;\">Social media for small business is a topic close to my heart.\u00a0 I have run a number\u00a0of small businesses and one of the biggest challenges has always been time.\u00a0 As a small business owner you have to wear many hats: Sales, HR, bookkeeper, janitor, manager and marketing strategist; when all you really want to do is what you love and make money at it\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am writing a series of 4 blog posts to help small businesses strategically manage their social media marketing through:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Making a social media marketing plan<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Using social media<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Effective blogging<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pulling it all together in an email list<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Making a Social Media Plan<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">First you need to know who you are and what you are offering.\u00a0 Then you need to define who your audience is.\u00a0 With these 2 things defined the marketing plan falls into place between the goal posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who are you &amp; what do you offer?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.freelanceadvisor.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Who-Am-I.jpg\" alt=\"My Identity by Image by \u2665KatB Photography\u2665\" width=\"224\" height=\"195\" \/>Instead of making up an example I thought I would use my own business as a case in point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>A bit about branding<\/em><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> it is a good idea to do a branding exercise to define a few things about who you are and what you offer and where your niche is.\u00a0 I watched a bunch of YouTube videos about branding and this is what fell out of the process:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am a good graphic designer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I can design for both print and web.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I understand programming and can execute my own designs in html.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I understand the needs of all types of print.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am also a decent copy writer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>The offer:<\/em><\/strong> I offer my clients a complete graphics solution.\u00a0 I will make their marketing collateral work across both print and web media.\u00a0 I will take care of their marketing needs.\u00a0 I offer value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 1.5em;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Who is your audience &amp; where are they?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><strong><em>The audience:<\/em><\/strong> My clients are solopreneurs, small businesses, and medium sized businesses that have a budget for marketing.\u00a0 They understand the value in having brand consistency across platforms and they don\u2019t have the expertise or time to do it for themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Where is your audience? <\/em><\/strong>This is a whole topic on its own, so rather than reinventing the wheel I will point you to: Ken MacArthur: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kenmcarthur.com\/the-top-10-ways-to-find-your-audience\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Top 10 Ways to Find Your Audience<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you can answer the questions Ken poses then you are really on your way to finding your audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Reaching your audience<\/span><\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<div style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynvegan.com\/img\/music\/dinosaurjr\/terminal52\/25.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"235\" height=\"157\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Speak to your audience<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Keywords:<\/span><\/strong> Some of this is covered in Ken MacArthur\u2019s blog above, but I wanted to emphasize it.\u00a0 To reach your audience, you need to know what they are searching for when they want your product.\u00a0 To do this you need a list of \u201ckeywords\u201d pertaining to your business offering.\u00a0 You can get recommendations from Google and other sources.\u00a0 You can check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.googlekeywordtool.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Google Keyword Tool Box<\/span><\/a> get some Keywords and some insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">#Hashtags:<\/span><\/strong> I like #Hashtags because they offer the opportunity to group posts and tweets into categories that may not be included in the post itself. For instance I want this post to be seen by solopreneurs, entrepreneurs, small &amp; medium-sized business so when I tweet about it I might use #hashtags like:\u00a0 #smallbiz, #smallbusiness, #business, #solopreneur, or #entrepreneurs.\u00a0 You should make a list of #hashtags that are already in use that pertain to your audience and use them when you post, but don\u2019t be redundant, don\u2019t #hashtag a post that already contains the keywords in the title.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Defining Your Goal<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<div style=\"width: 298px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-top: 15px; margin-bottom: 15px;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-mvZIVLhsWkE\/Tq6gSEaXLwI\/AAAAAAAACR0\/t5mWk9InwTk\/s1600\/pdc_klingons.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"216\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Things in common<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What do you want to gain from Social Media?\u00a0 Aye, there\u2019s the rub!\u00a0 Truly, what you want to gain from social media is engagement.\u00a0 You want to find your niche audience, you want to interact with them, you want to be part of their world, and them yours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is a lot of buzz about Authentic Entrepreneurs (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialaficionados.com\/tag\/authentic-business\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">see link http:\/\/www.socialaficionados.com\/tag\/authentic-business\/<\/span><\/a> ) and what this is in a nutshell is <strong><em>know who you are<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>be who you are.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Guess what, people who like \u201cwho you are\u201d will read your stuff.\u00a0 And every now and then ask them to subscribe to your newsletter.\u00a0 That\u2019s it!\u00a0 All you want them to do is give you their email so you can send them some stuff a few times each month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It sounds like a lot of work, but that is why I mentioned the Authentic Entrepreneur because if you are being \u201cwho you are\u201d the people that will connect with you will mostly be people you enjoy reading their stuff too and time flies when you are having fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Leave a comment below, I love comments.<\/span><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What do you want to gain from Social Media?
